It was still dark. In my rearview mirror, an orange streak of sunrise shone over I-20 and pine trees. Driving west before 6 a.m. is lonely. But the old excitement of possibility, of road trips with Daddy, bubbles up. Early morning driving feels like freedom.
I just knew it was going to be a critter! Ha! I had a similar thing happen on the way to my daughter’s rehearsal dinner after working all day at Riverbanks botanical garden on floral designs for the wedding the next day. It was raining cats & dogs as my faithful sidekick sister & I were racing down I-26 to the Seibels House for the rehearsal dinner.
A battery operated radio was somehow turned on and it was too far back in the car & wedding preparation mayhem tools & supplies to reach easily. I offered my sister a shiny quarter to get out in the rain at the stop light to turn it off but she declined.
Great example of building suspense !!
You had me going!!! I don’t mind garden verity snakes but….
That was real good storytelling.

Wonderful pacing, mystery hook, and interweaving with the Churchill book was genius. Loved it!

Hahahaha. I was getting scared for you. Fun . You really painted a picture.
😅😅😅
I should have realized that since you are alive to write the story it wasn't a rattlesnake, but you really had me going there.
