Sometimes I give directions in the small-town country style. Bob swears the first time he came to the farm I gave country-style directions that caused him to drive around lost for an hour. “You told me to turn at Downer School Road. Finally, as the sun set, I tried Hammond Road, where there were remnants of an old building that I thought possibly could have been a school.”
I so enjoyed this essay. I was happy to read the last paragraph , to know you have the fortitude and wisdom to keep YOUR southern in this book. One of my favorite lines was the one about crew cuts shining in the dark. It made me smile , it's an amusing way to describe a crew cut and I could really picture it. Loved finding out about oyster roasts (burlap bag and hose) ..so cool.
Club recently read the book on a Street Called Easy at a Cottage Named Joy and those of us who were not from the south thoroughly enjoyed the NYC authors of the south and its inhabitants. Some natives were insulted by the books comments on the Aikenites the rest of us aka former Yankees didn't think it was rude at all. As a former Californian married to an Aiken boy I still struggle to comprehend his southern speech at times even after 33 yrs. And lets just face you can quit being a Baptist - him or a Ltheran - me, but the effects linger on. We manage to muddle on. Hoping for at least 59 yrs. 😘
Loved the book. My dh used to clean the carpet there as a kid when the Whitneys owned it. Probably true BUT Ca speaks English as a rule SC does NOT. Everybody from SC seems to pronounce ON as OWN which in CA means u possess something. And then theres that dubya for a w letter and a few other like flow for floor and I could go on. 😂
Oh, this was great and one of your best written batch of memories ever! Can't wait for the book!!!

Looking forward to getting my book.
Dang. I love this! weekly installments of nostalgia and personal stories of a nature nerd compatriot. Stay muddy! ❤️
Be careful on those dirt roads in Beech Island at night, because you may run into the devil himself, James Henry Hammond.

He probably thinks the effects of being a Californian linger on in you! (I met those Joy guys a few times and liked the book)
