This morning really was, as Ezra says, “Like swimming.” But it’d be like swimming in a pool after you cut the grass and all the clippings went into it. And some bugs and slugs too.
Normal years, we work outside in the heat, usually on what we call ‘tropical hours’ — 6 a.m-2 p.m. But this year, the wall had to be fixed before it fell, and I’ve had some kidney stone complications, so inside work suits us all.
Not that it’s easy, taking down the plaster in an 1850s room in what we call the new part of the house (the old part is 1750s.) But it is better than swimming in a sea of seedheads, grit, and slugs.
Meet our crew of interns in the video. Both Sam and Ezra have honed their skills in college —Sam is working on book stuff on the farm this summer. Ezra leading the house reno program. They’ll tell you about their specialized farm work for the summer. Lily is 17, is brand new on the farm, but we’re thrilled she’s going to keep working even after high school starts back in July. Yeah, we had to leave her outside alone in the heat today. But as she grows into the farm, as Sam and Ezra have over their si
summers here, she’ll realize it’s a lot more than selling crinum. It’s something different every day.
What Gloria says - I love it!
The lilies & the morning fog look divine!
