In just two weeks, the new book reached number one in the Amazon category of Southern Gardening and now it’s a “Hot New Release.”
More meaningful to me are the comments that have come in from across the country. People are drawn in by the stories and the quirky cast of characters who all make big personal journeys while they’re gardening. I’ve reveled in emails that say things like:
“The intertwining of personal growth with plant growth and garden development is balanced and masterful.”
I don’t know the ages of most people who’ve responded, but one especially touching comment came from a young local reader who said,
“I didn’t know all that happened here, and … your garden crew sounds more fun than mine!”
I so want this book to speak to young people, to help them know there’s always fun and reward in following your passion. And to remind them, as some difficult stories in the book do, that we’ve come a long way in celebrating personal freedoms. By looking back, we can recognize power and pain in society that we never want to happen again.
A Back of the Book Compliment
I am thrilled by another compliment that came from a writer whose books I’ve loved for a decade. That he’s a respected historian made it even better. One of the beautiful parts of the way I published Garden Disruptors is that I can change things quickly. So, with his permission, I added his words to the back cover. All new copies have this quote at the bottom:
Early on, I asked y’all to buy on Amazon. Thanks to all who did. It’s still a great option. But now, we have copies on our website—order here, and we’ll send a signed copy.
Any bookstore, gift shop, or library can order it from their regular distributors.
The quote on this postcard is from the epilogue. That chapter caused me lots of anxiety but brought me tremendous understanding. Another person wrote to say,
“The epilogue is so important and insightful. I want everyone not just to read it but understand it.”
Thank you all for your support, encouragement, and comments. This has been an amazing experience that started years ago — I’m proud that y’all are part of it, and that you’ve encouraged me and helped spread the word about a controversial book!
Usually, I write a substack post on Thursday and Sunday. This one is just a little extra crowing about the book. Thanks to all who’ve supported and encouraged me through this project!
YASSSSS! Harlan!! A coup! Indeed a coup! Congratulations. So happy to hear all this good news about the book. This sounds very promising. Like good organic growth. So pleased!
